Dizziness

It is easy to become dehydrated from frequent urination. Dehydration is a common cause of dizziness.

Weight Loss

Unexplained weight changes, especially significant losses of over 5% of body weight, may indicate an underlying medical condition such as diabetes. For diabetics, weight loss occurs despite an increased appetite. The body cannot convert energy from food and will begin burning fats and muscle for energy resulting in the weight loss. Unexplained weight loss is more common in patients with type 1 diabetes.

Blurred Vision

High blood sugar draws fluids from body tissues including the lens of the eyes. As the lens loses moisture it loses the ability to focus, causing blurred vision. Diabetes also damages blood vessels of the eye which if left untreated may cause vision loss and blindness.

Slow-healing Wounds and Infections

Diabetes may reduce the body’s ability to heal and fight off infections. High blood sugar may gradually cause blood vessel damage which leads to poor blood circulation. Blood carries proteins and cells needed for repairing injuries. However, poor circulation makes it difficult for blood to reach the injured or infected area. This may cause wounds to remain open, unhealed, and increases the risk of infections.

Abnormal Sensations in the Hands and Feet

High blood sugar may damage nerves, causing neuropathy. People with neuropathy experience a tingling sensation, loss of sensation, or burning sensation in the hands and feet.

If you have diabetes risk factors and experience any of these symptoms, contact your healthcare provider to check for diabetes. People at risk for diabetes will benefit from timely prevention strategies such as diet and exercise. Early detection and treatment of diabetes will help to minimize the risk of complications.
